These are some shots from my company holiday party held at the Fairmont in San Jose this last weekend. I brought an umbrella setup for fun as well.
I think they turned out smashingly but I sooo wish I had brought some gels. The tungsten lighting was very very orange and I had difficult time blancing my flash.
So many of my shots were converted to black and white..which actually worked I think!

The 1st 2 shots really grabbed me!

    Hey Qarik,

I certainly agree with you that these turned out really nice. I'm not fond of #8 for the angle and #13 for the unfortunate softness on their faces/eyes.

    How bout' some Strobist info...

    Good work thumb.gif

single 40 in umbrella just outside camera view (maybe 18 inches) and maybe 60 degrees or so to the model (a touch more side lighting). TTL using sb900. I had this at iso 6400 on d700 using 85mm 1.4 at or close to wide open.

randy wrt #8, do you feel to much leg is showing or that the angle makes her legs looks bit larger?

I think the legs look heavy... Don't have a lot of time right now but I really like that pic of Len. Looks like a good time was had by all!

I think that is my favorite shot of the night. Len is a silicon valley legend. one of the founders of IDT...he sits on our board of directors (maybe chairmen?). He loves riding harleys I here.

1st thing that caught me was the detail in his eyebrows.

Really nice job. That wall paper is a great background and you controlled your DOF against it to create a really nice background. The first two are definitely the best of the bunch.

The negative issues I see with this image is the angle, what appears to be lens perspective distortion, and brightness of the legs.

While the angle isn't really bad, with the lens you used it makes her legs look way too large. Her calf is larger in the image than her whole head.

Her legs are the brightest thing in the image. This not only immediately draws your eye straight to this, but it also exacerbates the issue of the legs looking overtly large.

This should in no way detract from your other very nice shots!

    All said, YMMV

#4 is simply outstanding in my opinion. Love the short depth of field on the bkg and the lighting ratio. Watch out for the rim of the glasses cutting into the eye. Great impact, congrats.

Nice shots -- agree on No. 4. Too bad his glasses were a touch crooked. The way he is framed up with the wallpaper in the background makes a beautiful shot. Nice idea to use that spot for the backdrop.
