I hope its ok to post here in wildlife.... and if not well boot me over.

Simple questions about using flash while out shooting Birds:

Assuming for "catch lighting" only,

1. Do you use a external flash?
2. At what point does flash become useless? Like, in distance or situation, or anything about using flash with super telephoto...

Thanks for any info

A

I generally use a flash mounted on a Wimberly flash bracket, and use a better beamer to extend the flash. I have found that the flash will affect the photo from a considerable distance.

Click on "my gear" to see a photo of the better beamer and bracket.

I use flash (only for fill/catch) with a considerably large amount of my Wildlife Shooting.

And as Glenn mentioned can effect an image from a considerable distance.

Well, for me no flash, I like not abusing the things I love to shoot. That said flash does have it's place. It will make the eye look bad in many cases. But PS folks care not they just add an eye. In a talk about the use of flash someone I was shooting with said the shutter sound bothers them more than the flash. We tested his idea and to a big degree he was right. Flash still affects them at times not as much as what I would have said before the test. I do not like being wrong
