C5050 storage useage
Hi.
First post on what looks like a superb site.
I should have looked into this in more detail before buying the camera, but I assumed the Olympus C5050 would simply take a 1Gb XD card which it plainly doesn't (at least I got 1 more +ive feedback on ebay for buying it!). My question is, what is the best way to make the most (cost effectively) of the memory options available on the C5050? My experience has been limited to SD and XD before purchasing this new camera a few weeks ago. I'm very pleased with the camera BTW and when I thnk I get anywhere near some of the great photos here I'll be brave enough to post some.
All advice/pointers welcome.
Many thanks,
Darren

I used to have an Olympus c740 it was a great point&shoot camera. Also Gus (Humungus) used to shoot with an Olympus. They are worthy cameras, in my opinion.
As for you question about what memory to use I'm not sure I understand. I had a quick look here http://www.steves-digicams.com/2002_reviews/c5050.html
and they say it will take xD SD or CF (compact flash). So I'm not sure why your recently purchased xD card won't work.
As for what format is the most cost effective, they all seem to be about the same price for 1Gb on www.bhphotovideo.com ($72.95 to $79.95) I wouldn't think with the c5050 you would have to worry about write speed to the card so just a basic San Disk card should work.
Another thing to thing about is if you plan on upgrading to an SLR anytime soon most of them take CF cards. Some take multiple types of cards but in general they take CF cards. So you don't want to buy xD cards only to turn around a year later and buy a SLR and then have to also buy CF cards.
Look forward to seeing some pics from your new camera

It's better to be hated for who you are than to be loved for who you're not.

I had that camera & rung its neck for 18 months...it does a fantastic job. Have you tried putting a larger CF card in it ?
I cant point you to them but i know there is a forum on the net somewhere (i used to belong to it) that has a large population of people that specialise in the Olympus C series. Im sorry but i cant remember its name but you may find it searching.
They are the gurus & know it ALL on this camera upside down & inside out.

I've used point&click Fuji Finepic range for years so I'm looking forward to understand the Olympus in more detail. Might even look for an evening Photography class.
I get a fomating error when I put the 1Gb XD card in the camera. Today I'll try a camera shop to see if they can use the card in another camera to prove its good. I dropped an email off to Olympus Tech Support but didn't get a reponse for over a week now. I imagined since the camera came out a few years ago and the 1Gb cards weren't available then I was suspect whether it could cope with it.
BUT, I found this site earlier http://www.wrotniak.com/photo/c5050/c5050-rev.html#RESOLUTION which is a good review of the camera and has a Feb '05 update quoting the 1G XD card is good. I'll come back and let you know how I get on in case someone else hits the same problem.
I've never used CF cards Gus. If I don't get anywere with the XD I'll look into it.

So a 1Gb CF card it is.
Thanks for your help anyways.
Darren
I could be totally of track though as i tend to do that a lot.
Good Luck
Gus
