Funny thing about cropping. Usually we crop to retain only what is important to the scene. In this case, the area on the right of the seated subject looks like it's unimportant. Yet, that horizontal line of the bench leads the eye to the seated subject and emphasizes that the old man is alone while the other subjects have someone.

That is a nice take on the photo, Tony. Along this line of thought, the people on the left edge (behind the guy) and the couple seen through the window reinforce this.
Thanks B. D. Your crop does draw attention to the contrast between the two people better. It loses the reason why she is so jovial (assuming it is the conversation with the guy, who is HUGE). But I like it!
