Maybe this means to appreciate what you have now. ne_nau.gif it seems likely that all or most dslrs from the canon and nikon camp will now offer HD video with still. I am not ballsy to claim that we should just give in, but if the camera is too pricey for you now because of the latest feature, wait on it. It will drop in price in time and during that time you will further appreciate what you are shooting with now.

There are those who buy the latest and never use the video function. There are those that do. If it isn't something that you want, don't use it and focus on creating stellar stills.

    Video isn't a gimmick
Lets compare: The D700 and 5DII came out around the same time, cost a similar amount and both have full frame sensors. I haven't heard any compelling argument that the D700 is better than the 5D as a stills camera (yes, there are pros and cons for both, but there's no obvious winner overall). But the 5D has video. There is no evidence whatsoever that the 5D would have been any cheaper or better as a stills only camera.

Having the video capability will have increased sales, and spread the R&D cost and increased the economies of scale, so it probably actually reduces the cost of the camera if anything. After all, the additional components in the camera probably cost very little.

I had to buy another P&S camera to shoot video and for easy carrying. If my DSLR had video I might have skipped the P&S. Video is an important way for me to store memories and I find it a nice feature. Ultimately, I don't suspect that adding video will make the price of cameras rise dramatically.

I think that the addition of powerful video capabilities to DSLRs is one of the biggest advances to come to our cameras in a long time, not that far from being a film-to-digital kind of milestone.

I'm working as an underwater photo/video pro, and suddenly my shop has cameras that shoot incredible stills, and production grade video, and can potentially do both on the same dive! It puts a tool out there that has already been embraced by indie films, and even mainstream TV to some extent. Have you seen footage on TV that was clearly taken with a tilt/shift lens recently? I know I have. How often did you see that in the pre-5dII world? It's a video game-changer. Having had a crash course in video 3 months ago, it's another exciting new addition to my creative toolbox.

Video will never have the same value to me as stills, granted. I value an image that you can hang on a wall so much more than a DVD you watch on your TV. My customers probably do too, but for some reason it makes perfect sense to people to spend more on a video than they would on half a dozen great stills, and it pays to remember that.

If something new starts seeming like a danger instead of an opportunity, it's time to rethink some things!

And for the hobbyists, I truly doubt video has added anything except high resale value to the 5dII and 7d, and if you're really adamant about having nothing to do with video, you can ignore it the same way I ignore ISO setting above 1600, the green box, and the direct print button (on those relics that still have it, that is)

    Hey, good point!

I said much the same as you about the new market, and the need to accept the new products that are elbowing their way in!thumb.gif

The live, long-exposure histogram readout would be INSANE!!! I can just imagine it now, no more blind guessing at 30-60 minute exposures! Just get a rough idea, open the shutter, and watch the histogram "grow"...

    =Matt=

See Canon, I'm not the only one:D :D:D

Give me "Liveview histogram grow feature"!!!!!!!

I want an iPad, to give me total - in studio style - control of all camera functions ( aperture, ISO, focus, shutter speed etc ) AND a real time LIVE VIEW full size iPad image as well. Now that would rock!!
