Seen what I suspect is the very same hoverfly a few times when the sun appears. ID'd as Scaeva selenitica.

incredible! I am trying my hand at macro photography, with my canon 400D and Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro (1:1), but so far nothing even close to being that spectacular.

I'm shooting at higher magnification than 1:1 with an MPE-65 lens. Once you get used to shooting at 1:1 mag it's worth investing in a set of extension tubes which will get you to over 2:1 with your lens.
