No, I was just there practicing with my new 70-200 2.8 lens. I only attended on Sunday and was not familiar with the venue. I thought I would have to shoot from a distance, but as it turned out, the only way to get shots was from up close - which is great, but that was the only lens I brought. So mostly I shot individual shots. Got a few decent ones, but still need a lot of practice.
Anyone shooting this weekend? Leaving for Atlanta today. When I get a moment, I will try to post a few I took over the last couple weeks.
I am using a laptop to view these, but are these a bit orange? Was this how the light actually showed up? I have a few shots of some teams that look blue, but the lights were blue so I shot it as it actually looked. Just curious.

Yes the lighting was a bit orange..that comp. had some of the worst lighting I have ever had.
Rocket, there is a HUGE Cheersport comp. this weekend in Atlanta? Are you attending.
I'm not shooting it but we are heading to it on Sat. to watch a couple of teams.
Travel Safe...the white stuff is supposed to be thick up your way...don't bring it with you.
Sorry it took so long to reply, I was also in Atlanta shooting my daughters teams at Cheersport. My shots were not the greatest, but I am constantly working on it. Let me know what you think. I loved the lighting there, but it also made it hard to catch the tosses at their peaks without problems. (how do you do that on the fly properly...anyone?) Below will be one of my examples, looks fuzzy or hazy because of the bright lights. Not all of these are from Cheersport as you will notice, but some of my recent shots taken, some are my daughter, others are from her teams, and one random. All shot in AV with 1DMKIII.
1. Toss with the bright lights nearby... ISO 1600, 1/1250, f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM with IS turned OFF.
2. My daughter.. ISO 1600, 1/800, f/2.8, 70-200 with IS turned OFF.
3. Another team from my daughter's gym.... ISO 1600, 1/1250, f/2.8.. same lens
4. My daughter again... from Jamfest in Indy this year. NO CHEER FACE!!! ISO 1600, 1/500, f/2.8
5. another teammate. I know the color is off in this one... ISO 1600, 1/1600, f/2.8
6. Last one, shot this at a local show (Rochester GLCC Up State Championship) ISO 6400, 1/250, f/2 shot with a 100mm f/2 USM. Lighting here was BAD!
tjl1388 - I don't have a daughter in the sport. I am working on my portfolio of sports pics. I have very few indoor sports due to lack of fast equipment, but I just purchased a Canon 70-200L 2.8 lens and was anxious to give it a go. Long story short, due to the economy my employer is offering a good retirement package to eliminate positions, and I may benefit from this. I have always wanted to do sports photography as a business, now I have an opportunity to give it a try. I know I have a lot of learning to do beforehand, so I am going to as many sporting events as I can for the experience.
Rocketman766 - Your problem with the bright lights is that you are using AV mode. Try metering for the floor action and then set your camera to Manual and set the f/stop and shutter speed to the same settings as you metered the floor. In AV mode, your camera changes the exposure when you point up to the bright lights. In manual, your settings will not change.
I also went to the nationals in Atlanta (I live in the area). And by sheer coincidence, I shot some pics of your daughters team and I think I have a few that include her (the ankle brace helped me indentify her from your pics). I will post them on my smugmug in a day or two and you are welcome to grab them if you like. Probably nothing great, but maybe you will like them. Here are a couple of my better ones from your team. All taken with the 70-200, f/2.8 at 1/500.
10smark, I will check them out. That is funny that you mention the ankle brace, that is exactly how I find her when I lose my bearing on the floor! I could be wrong, but I think I may have seen you shooting. Where you standing outside of the VIP seating area to the left? I saw someone at a couple stages shooting with a 70-200 (canon) from this area, shooting different teams. By the way, those are some good shots.
I don't know why I stayed in AV mode all weekend. I usually do set up in manual, but lately tried AV and didn't change it back. When I am shooting my daughters teams ( ie. not working...) I usually try new things, angles, etc. etc. which gets me in trouble with my wife. One day I will learn..lol.
Such a small world you guys. I was there Sat. night watching the Coed Level 5 teams, Top Gun etc.
That's funny. All you those look good. Great captures.
10smark, we need to talk... I'll pm you later this week. I have an "in" at Cheernation and may be able to get any of there work that I want. I just may not be able to physically do it.
I'm shooting a small comp. in Sandy Springs, Ga. this weekend..I'll post up what I get.
Rocketman766 - here is a pic of someone you may know:
During this routine, I was behind the priority seating on the on the right side of the stage (facing the stage). It probably was me you saw. I moved around and shot at different stages, always to the far side (opposite the main aisle) to try to be where it was less crowded (if that was possible). Since I was not with a team, I did not enter the priority seating area and I did end up with alot of shots with the back of heads in my pictures. I went ahead and posted everything of your daughters team that I took on my smugmug. Send me a message and I will send you a password. Definitely look me up if you come down next year.
tjl1388 - yes, please keep me in mind if you need help or back-up shooting an event. As I mentioned, I want to start shooting events and would like any opportunity to do some work (or even just get some practice).

Were you the comp. photographer? I know he uses smugmug for his galleries.
