PacSafe Bags?

Hello All-

I am concerned about the security of some of the locations I travel to. Not saying that they are bad parts of town, saying that hotels are not secure nor are construction sites. I have been looking for a subtle secure bag, something that will not say "hey there is expensive stuff in here". I have been thinking about getting a Pacsafe bag. I want to go with an internal security, not the overwrap mesh style.

I was curious if anyone has used them and their results. The contents would vary between usage, for personal it might be a MacBook Pro, a Canon XTi, and a lens and the other small accessories. It also could be two laptops (1 for work 1 for personal). Since they are both 15 inch laptops I realize it will need to be big, but I still want to be able to use it on a plane :)

Any ideas or comments? Other than pack lighter. :D

I have an older version of the TravelSafe 12L. I never travel without it. I keep my MacBook Pro and SLR in it when I don't want to carry them around town. It's far from invincible; anyone who comes back with some decent wire cutters could get through the mesh. But it's more peace of mind and a slightly more time-consuming obstacle than a locked bag, for hotel rooms with no safe. I never store it visible in the room, though, I secure it then close other luggage around it or throw clothes over it.

One problem is I often have to pick and choose what gets to fit in the one I have. It looks like they have a more square-shaped 20L on their website, but the dimensions seem smaller, I'm confused. I'd love a larger one. Or a second one. When I travel with others they're always "Hey...can I put my stuff in there too?"

I picked the TravelSafe over an actual PacSafe bag because the PacSafe bags don't fit my requirements and I don't like the PacSafe logo on the outside ("I've got something worth locking up in here"). I prefer to put a TravelSafe inside a normal scruffy bag.

I do not use it in my carryon because my valuables are with me anyway, and because space is at a premium in that bag after I stuff my valuable gear in it. I flatten the Pacsafe and store it in the big bag, and deploy it in the hotel room.

Sorry I have no experience with the pacsafe stuff, but along the same idea, you could simply try their mesh by itself ( I have seen these at REI for backpacks)

This way you can use your normal camera bag

    Camera Security
Here are a few websites that list much more information about these camera security products than what is found on their website. Note all of these website link back to the same website - it just that they list them on separate pages so you can see them at one glance. Many of these items have videos you can watch too.....Also, this website has better prices, a nice plus in this economy!!!!

    Camera Security Bags

    Camera Security Straps

    Camera Security Products

Hope this provide you the additional information you may need.

Thanks. I am hoping to find a few during my travels and see if I find something that will work. I have not had great luck with ordering bags (of any kind) site unseen.

I use a Camsafe 200 bag for an everyday walk around bag and it's quite nice. I find it comfortable and it looks good without screaming "I have an expensive Camera!" The ability to lock it closed and then lock it too something solid is great for bars and other places where I might not want to carry my camera around constantly.

You can see it here - http://www.pacsafe.com/www/index.php?_room=3&_action=detail&id=116

Their Travelsafes are also nice for locking up smaller things like passports, extra cash and my backup PS camera when I travel.

If you want to play with them in person before buying, REI often has PacSafe stuff in their stores.

The reason I decided against that is I feel half of security is not being visibly tempting. Every day the hotel room door is propped open for a time as the maintenance crew does its work. While I have not used the mesh, it seems like a shiny exterior mesh around luggage in the corner of the room would scream "I got a pile of stuff inside here I gotta protect!" to anyone in the room and also those walking past the open door in the hotel hallway.

I feel better with a Pacsafe inside my luggage with the mostly hidden cable securing them both. Nothing appears unusually valuable to the crew or passerby, and the security doesn't become evident unless someone has already disturbed the bag and whatever clothes I threw over it.
