Hey everyone. I am thinking of venturing into the world of Off Camera Flash for various sports. I shoot mainly motorsports. I am curious to know who uses what for triggers and Lights. I am really hoping to use Nikon Flashes for the most part (SB-800 or SB-900's) It has to be easy and portable and be able to handle some harsh conditions.

There was a post where a couple Alien Bee products were used for a FMX shoot. Budget permitting, i may work up to that but not right off the bat. Unless my idea of cost is wrong.

Ideas are welcome!

EDIT: Mod, I put this in this forum as its use is for sports - and sports only! No yucky weddings for this guy!

Well those nikon flashes have a remote capability. Check on how far the signals reach, it may do until you get more involved

Don't forget you lose fps, so you might have to change your shooting orientation (I did when using flash.... waiting for the shot)

If you are line-of-sight to the flashes, the SU800 works wonders because you can shoot fast and adjust everything from the unit on your camera. If any of the flashes are not in your direct line of sight (hidden or turned so that the SU800 and sensor cannot "see" each other) and you are outside you will need something else. I use my SU800 all of the time and love it.

The Commander Mode on your camera will do a good job as long as you can pre-set everything and don't need to make fast, on the fly adjustments. It is also a line-of-sight tool. And is free.

I would definitely try those before buying triggers. That said, I am reading about PW's and they are on the list for those times when I want to put a flash around a corner.

If I post it, please tell me how to make it better. My fragile ego can take it.

I like the lumedyne battery system.
Its been bulletproof, the batteries and heads have traveled the country many times over and still are working great.
Breaks down into a small package which is great for backcountry shots where you need to travel compact and light.

    Pocket wizards are the bomb.
GREAT product that has proven it's self to be the best wireless system out there. A little big, but they work AWESOME!!!
