Iowa Eagles

I spent yesterday travelling the state looking for eagles. We started off in Burlington where we found 20 eagles, all hanging out on the far side of the Mississippi. So we headed to Keokuk where we found about 50 that were quite skittish. So we made a dash them to Ottumwa further in state where we found absolutely no eagles. So since Pella was on our way home to Des Moines, we tried to make it there while there was still a bit of light. Luckily Pella was the "Honey Hole". There were more than 140 eagles hanging out below the Red Rock Dam.

Apparently, this is a down year. There more more than 600 eagles at some locations on the Mississippi this time last year. Something about the Shad washing downstream seems to have caused the reduction in numbers.

Here you can count more than 50 bald heads in the trees. (Pella, Iowa)

    Way to stick with it.

I've gone to Burlington for the past 3 years, but the counts have been so down this year, we'll
    probably skip it.
Hopefully things will return to normal next year.

Thanks. It was definitely worth all of the driving we did to finally find them in large numbers.
