I have no idea how collected photos work. I have my gallery set to be arranged by Date Taken, but this does not seem to apply to collected photos / virtual copies. These copies are placed in a seemingly random order. Can anyone help explain why and tell me how to fix it?

Thanks

    Hi,

My name is Christina and I'm a Support Hero here on SmugMug. We're so sorry that you're having trouble with collected photos.

Once you collect the photos to the new gallery you'll need to set the sort type and direction in the gallery settings window. You can get there by either clicking on the "Settings" button below the gallery thumbnail or, if you're in the gallery you can click on Tools > This Gallery > Gallery Settings. Then, scroll down to Look & Feel and choose an auto sort type and direction.

If you continue to have trouble could you please post a link to the gallery for us and let us know how you'd like it sorted (ascending or descending) and we'll check it out for you!

    We're Standing By,
    Christina

I think I see the problem now. My Dailies gallery so far has been filled by copying pictures I like from one gallery and moving it to my Dailies gallery. Looks like in the process of copying the picture, the Date Taken and Date Modified attributes were NOT copied. I made sure of this by viewing the original picture and the copy that is in the Dailies gallery. The original has the Date Taken and Date Modified attributes, and the copy does not. I think that's why when I use virtual copies and sort by Date Taken, all of the pictures went haywire. I think this is a major bug.

Unfortunately, it is a known bug that some of the photo metadata is lost when you do a copy. Smugmug is aware of the problem and has been aware of it for a little while. They haven't said when they will fix it. For now, you'll have to stop using these damaged copies in a virtual gallery because they just won't sort properly.
