Dgrin Sharp Shooters Challenge #44

Welcome to Round #44 of the Dgrin Sharp Shooters Challenges. This challenge is open to any Dgrin member. It will run from Monday, February 8, 08:00am, EST time (GMT -5) to Monday, February 22, 08:00am, EST time (GMT -5).

The topic ready for your interpretation: Silhouettes

With light comes dark, and silhouettes offer an intriguing play between the two. Seek out interesting shapes or half-told stories, whatever might pique your viewers' curiosity.

Your Judges:
MrsCue (Winner of Round 41)
AaronNelson (Guest Judge)

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your entry is to be submitted directly into a Smugmug gallery. It's pretty simple, just go to the gallery link below, and follow the upload instructions at the top of the page: Remember, the basics stay the same: 1 entry per person, and the photo must be fresh, taken during this contest period. Do not use a minimal save method (such as "save for web"), and your exif will be embedded in your image, no worries!

To avoid disqualification, read, in full, the Dgrin Sharp Shooters Challenge Rules, there have been some slight modifications.

Nope, not for DSS. In case you're curious, all past themes for DSS are here.

I agree and I've noticed a lot of new members recently so this should make it new to them. It's new to me since I was around for the LPS challenges.

Hey, and keep in mind that this challenge theme is only half the old LPS theme, and then that it is plural and not singular. It's a very different theme indeed!headscratch.gif

    Yup -- remember us newbies.

What I'm really enjoying is seeing all the efforts. You know how fabulous the winners of the photo contests always look? (that is, their photos, not the winners themselves). It's nice to see the range of interpretation, and to see for yourself why some pictures pop out while others don't.

The depth of wisdom behind (s)
I have a strong feeling that Kerry very tactfully added the (s) to silhouette making it a plural. I have already been asked privately if the (s) means that our interpretation of the theme should include multiple silhouettes. In my opinion we would face the same question if the (s) had not been added. If Kerry had chosen not to add the plural then we could just as easily ask if only one silhouette was acceptable and would multiples qualify as conforming to the theme.

I believe that the photographer/artist has the responsibility to interpret each theme for how it speaks to them. Why should the presence or absence of a letter change your vision? If you see one or two or more then your interpretation is the right one. Of course ultimately it is up to the judges to decide how they themselves interpret the theme, we always risk seeing a vision that a judge deems totally inadequate.

My main point in all this is that I have always interpreted DSS as driven by the artistic vision of each individual. There are always multiple interpretations of a word plural or otherwise. So IMHO I am betting it wont matter if we have only one or millions of silhouettes within the image.

    What do you think? mwink.gif

I love love Silhouettes in photography! So this is going to be a hard round for me to judge... (IMO I think if one is less interested in the subject/theme it is easier to judge...)
Anyway, see ya all after the round is at a close. ( I want to view the gallery all at once to judge, and it's much to tempting to go lookie, so I will stay away...):D

    Good Luck All!

And also to Mrs.Cue! (our #41 round Winner!!) Good Luck on the judging...

it's going to be a Wide Dynamic round, (pun intended:D )

    Neophyte question
Since one can make their EXIF dates any date they wish, what is the point of "requiring" the picture to be "fresh"? Yes, people need to be "honest" but the EXIF is easily altered so what is the point of using that as a requirement?

I entered a photo without reading the fine print so I guess I'll know next time.

I suspect the point is just that; To keep us "honest". I can remember many years back someone had actually been caught doing just that trying to pass off a several year old photo as a fresh one. They were called on it and disqualified. This was before the DSS incarnation of the challenges.

In regards to changing or manipulating EXIF information I will use an analogy that I feel is the same in spirit. Locks were invented to deter people from entering access to houses, cars, treasure chests, or stealing bikes etc... As you know locks are easily circumvented and so the saying goes: Locks are for honest people. I think the same applies to a digital signature such as an EXIF, I would hope most people just choose to shoot within the two weeks. If someone did choose to cheat I also hope they would eventually be caught in that cheat. deal.gif

In summary this whole challenge thing was originally designed to be a combination of FUN and LEARNING, using a past photo is not congruent with either. :cry

That is exactly the point. The "challenge" is to come up with a fresh picture that satisfies a bi-weekly theme. It is much harder than going through past pictures and finding one that works. Much, much harder.

Of course people can cheat, but if they do, they are playing a different game and cheating themselves more than anyone else.

The exif requirement simply catches those who have not read the rules. It will never catch cheaters. Nevertheless, it helps keep the challenge playing field level.

Past photos, however, are fine in the mini-challenges. mwink.gif

I remember the incident that Sean mentioned. It wasn't pretty. The individual had posted his photo on another web site weeks before the date of the challenge, another member recognized the photo and reported it to the moderator.

It just ain't worth it. Save your beautiful photos taken prior to the challenge dates for local exhibits. :D

I just came from the challenge album. Alot of newbes to these challenges are posting images that are out of the date requirements and one has its exif stripped. I do hope they reshoot for this challenge following the requirments.

    Edit...
I just read the previous comments here and some already now about it. I had already posted a comment in the album to them. They need to read the rules!deal.gif

I had an Idea for this one right away, but I just don't have the time or the people to get it done.
So I'm going to give my idea away, cause I didn't see a shot like in the challenge gallery.
(I didn't check all the threads going, so someone may have it going there)

It's an oldie, but a goodie.
Silhouette, Silhouette, Silhouette, Silhouette, Silhouette, Silhouette, oh, oh, oh, oh.
    Two Silhouettes, on the shade.

I see a young couple, kissing in a second floor window, an angry man pounding on the front door trying
to get in. The amount of anger could vary by maybe just hitting the door with a fist, up to having a gun in one of his hands.
Of course the front outside light would have to be on to see this part of the shot plainly.

Being Valentines day and all over this challenge period, I figure something like this has to be in there.
(with or without the angry person)

    Good luck folks.
    dave.

    EXIF Question
I'm using PSP X3 and it has a bug - the EXIF data is not read properly when the file is opened, and not saved properly, even when all settings say to save EXIF. The bug has been reported to Corel.

Is there enough info saved on my shots for this competition - or do I have to go back and redo them in another program? It should still have the date in it. It was taken on 2010-02-17.

    For example,

Hi Jerry - I took a look at the gallery where you have this photo and if you hover over the image and press the info button (see image below) you can see that there is some EXIF but Not all especially the Date Taken. It has only the date modified in the information.

    791302521_y2zpN-O.jpg

One solution to this is if you have the original unmodified JPG you can upload it to a gallery on your site and put a link to the image that has ALL the EXIF info in your entry that you upload to the challenge gallery.

If you need help with this let us know. I'm sure I or someone else will be able to figure things out for you.

    HTH.
    Sean

EDIT: The above solution is only if you do not wish to re-edit the photo in a software program that does not strip the vital EXIF info that is required.
