Every so often, you'll come across a book that hits the spot.

Why not share your thoughts on a photography volume you've read
recently?

Creative Exposure Control -- Les Meehan
Creative Exposure Control walks you through the factors influencing
exposure, how to evaluate correct exposure (suck it up and buy a light
meter--you're better off :D) and finally how to be creative. All of this is
contained in a nice little 128 page book.

Explanations are clear and each concept comes with some practical
experiments so you can try things out. Geared more toward film, this
book is still valuable for teaching concepts.

Creative Exposure Control lists for around $20. The author is Les Meehan
and the ISBN No. is 0-8174-3727-4. The publisher is Amphoto Books.
