C&C always welcome!
Well, I got there. I couldn't take pix at the dress rehearsal of course (as somebody had pointed out), but I was a snapping fool otherwise!
I did get to see some of the torch relay which was very cool - the atmosphere in the town is amazing! This was atcually in Richmond, a VC suburb.
Not sure if these qualify as "good" or not, but I'm glad I caught them. Definitely different from the kind of thing I usually do!Technically these are disappointing to me (new body and I didn't have time to microadjust my lenses, PLUS had to use a teleconverter on the 135 which in theory is fine, but the light was so poor I had to use it wide open which isn't such a goodness with a TC) However, I suspect this kind of "fast and furious" shooting is always going to involve compromises; without the TC I couldn't have nailed these shots (the extra length let me shoot around people in the way) and I'm glad to have them, slightly softer than the 135 usually delivers or not. :thumb
Waiting for the torch
Handing over
(technical note: I'm not sure why the WB's are so disparate - I DID reconcile them when processing, but something isn't quite true... or perhaps the light was changing more than I realised! In any case, I know they're not the same and will readdress when I finish the set; for now, try to look past that.... )

Yeah, it was touch and go there for a while - we got slammed by the first storm going out, met the 2nd storm over Minneapolis, and then had to try and get BACK yesterday. It's been travel hell. But was totally worth it!
I can highly recommend watching the opening tonight - not sure how it will translate to TV, but the big "set piece" was BREATHTAKING in person. Sworn to secrecy onsite so can't say more (they, entirely reasonable, made a big deal out of confidentiality), but I'd give it a try if you have time to watch it. The ATMOSPHERE was the best part - I've never been in such a large group whether the overwhelming dynamic was "happy". Really cool.
What about nordic? That has the possibility of being less crowded and more accessible. And because the races have massed starts, there's a lot of room for dramatic competition in the images. And you can probably get pretty close. Also they aren't going as fast as downhill skiers (but still pretty fast, think cycle racing.) And the effort should really tell on their faces.
I should also have saidd - C&C welcome. I know some of their failings, but would love comments so that if I ever wind up in a similar "turn myself into a journo for the occasion" situation I can do it better!!
I didn't have a CLUE that you were here (VanTown = My Home Town!)
We could've chased rabbits, together.
Aww, phooey! That said, the friends I stayed with (who invited me to the dress rehearsal - she's a volunteer for the Games) kept us SO busy in our brief time there that I don't think I could have managed to meet up anyway.
I'll just have to try and make it back again one fo these days! (No hardship as far as I'm concerned - I've always loved Canada, and my brief stay in Vancouver did nothing to change my opinion. It was AWESOME!!)
Kinda sensed that... No worries.
BUT!!! You really need to do better in order get the TRUE flavour of things. Try it on when there isn't a spectacle of global proportions goin' on AND make it a week, minimum!
> Even then, you'll barely scratch the surface of "The Offerings" that this coastal community can fess up.
Til next time...
