This is really really close, Ben. I have looked at it a few times now and seen something in it each time that I recognize. The subtle diagonal composition (balloons pointing at subject's face) does it's job here.
The woman in black is a strong element and something of a distraction. I think the real story is the face of the woman in the foreground. At least that's what your title makes me think.

All good to hear because this shot is anything but a Grab (no offense Will).
I went out Thursday night with two items on my plate, one to capture a Challenge entry and to bring something Valentine oriented to "Street". I went to the beach looking and got this:
but alas there was no dramatic action or "Burt Lancaster moment on the Beach" (ask your parents).
So I headed off to the local shopping center. Inside CVS I noticed ladies hanging out at the card section. Cool I thought.
Then I walked around the card section seeing if I could find a strong/pleasing angle. shoot em from the front and you don't see the cards or balloons, shoot from the back and you Folks would say "WHY!" So I walked right up to there left side and took a couple. I think (luckily for me) the ladies were so engrossed in finding the right words on a card, that they never noticed me. Of course the above did happen quickly because something told me I needed the lady in black in the shoot and did not want her to leave.
Back at home I struggled with what else ...... Color or B&W....... Valentines outa be in color (yes) but color seemed awful (interior mixed light and all) so B&W it is but then it wasn't rich enough, till I saw the lady in black and set black point on her and white on one of the lights along with my normal workflow it then seeemed to come together.
on top on that I did manage a Challenge entry and no it's not the one here.
Of course it's not over yet......... Wifey loves my Challenge entry but wants to know why I'm taking
images of strange women and no logic has not helped.
