Selling Video Downloads

Can I price and sell a video download? I can think of two ways now that people can download a video and more easily play it on their HDTV.

Instead of doing the labor intensive process of creating DVDs or BDs, I could upload it once and sell the download to a bigger audience. Applying coupons would allow me to sell it at different rates based volume perhaps or the person purchasing the video.

Thanks for your consideration.

Let me add to my post.

WIDI netbooks are out. They allow a user to wirelessly display the screen to HDTV. Even though it requires a small box connected to the HDTV, it looks cool!

To me this means that I need to start using Watermarks in my videos.

Of course, DRM (digital rights mgt.) becomes an issue. If I can sell a downloaded video, then how can I prevent somebody from making illegal copies.

I expect that in the near future, we will upload lower resolution videos, with Watermarks, for proof viewing.

Hopefully Smugmug would host a larger resolution video available for download, maybe zipped, sans watermark.

Any potential progress on this? I though nothing about this feature until I realized the fact people ask my cousin a million photo technique questions and thought "why not make instructional videos for download...at profit of course"? Thought just recently came to me.

Well, you don't need SM for that. There's several other services out there like Revver that are much more suited to something like that.

But there is a feature request:
