Sorry for some of the repeats from the other thread but it's easier to post everything rather than sort through and figure out which ones I posted.

The waves were wild and you really get an appreciation for just what these guys go through. Some of my other heroes in the Mavericks are the photographers in the water. One guy was on a wave runner with a camera(no housing) and there were some photographers in the water on boards. Sorry about the PROOF thing. It was an accident. I hope it goes away soon. I changed the gallery setting in smugmug bit it has not gone away yet.

    Very nice stuff.

Jeeze there must have been a lot of reflective glare. That #2 lost some detail in the white foam. great shot

    Marvelous set!

Any problem with motion sickness? It sounded crazy with the rogue waves injuring the spectators, too.

There was plenty of light. I didn't bring my polarizing filter. # 18 the haze is actually someone's head. I had to mess with the pic to minimize the issue.

Great shots.thumb.gif Really like how you cover the various subjects (spectators, surfers, photogs) at the event.

    Wild shots! thumb.gif

I was on the cliff all day. The haze was nasty, but could have been a lot worse. Sadly, many spectators were injured when the huge waves went over the sea wall and took out everybody along the beach, vendors, the PA system, and everything not bolted to concrete.
Other than those tense moments, the surfing scene was loaded with some great moments of awesome rides and spectacular wipeouts.

Say Keith where were you shooting from? (up near the Coast Guard fence?) to get the swamping shot.

Was the buried rock view the the other side ?

    What lens did you use?

Thanks, I avoided eating or drinking before the trip, kept my eyes on the surfers and stayed on the least rocky part of the boat. We heard about the wave on the boat, glad no one was seriously injured.

I moved up to the cliff when I saw the tide coming in at about 7:30 am. Lens is a Canon 300L f2.8 IS with a 1.4 converter.(50D body) Lens stayed on a tripod all day. The big rocks were about straight in front.

Here's a reference shot. Also one of the original unaltered shots showing how bad the visibilty was. I think standing on a 45 degree angle all day and asking people not to block your shot was the worse of the experience.

I've tried that ridge. It gets more dangerous each year. You did good with just a 300 + 1.4. I met a guy up there with a 600mm (that works pretty good), but it has to be clear.

Looks like the fog layer was above Jacobov, he got clarity.

I was there on a clear day and what you see is just straight up spray. Looks to me like it's the boat all the way :)

Yes, I think I'll go the boat route next time. This was my first ever surfing shoot, so I went the basic route first.

For those that didn't see the article and awesome photos of Dolphins doing the big waves:

I think it IS the way to go , if you can keep from getting sick on the boat. It's tough at times with the rocking and the occasional guest getting in the way, but I think the results are great.:D
