Underwater Housing

I am heading to Tahiti in July and would love to take some underwater pics while snorkeling. I was thinking of getting a waterproof p&s but would much rather be using my 5d. I am not interested in a full housing but have been checking out the ewa-marine bags and also came across this one posted in another thread:

For the price it can't be beat but I would rather not buy anything that I will really only use once, does any site rent them? Will the DiCAPac fit my 5d with 24-70 lens? It says the lens can be 6", which is pretty much a perfect fit @70mm, but will I need to go wider? No experience whatsoever in UW photography what is a good focal length?

My advice to you would be to think more towards a full housing. Those bags have been known to leak (housings too) and ruin nice cameras. The waterproof point & shoot is definitely the cost effective option. When shooting underwater, you generally want to get as close as possible to the subject to minimize the amount of water and particles between camera and subject for best results, so think wide angle.

Have you thought about a Canon g11 (or other g series) with Canon's hard housing?

Second the suggestion for a point and shoot with an underwater housing option. DSLRs become incredibly huge when taken anywhere near water. Point and shoots stay nice and small. I scuba dive and my SLR pretty much becomes the reason for the dive when I bring it out.

Also, I think a wide angle or wide angle adaptor is really a good idea in the water.

I purposely bought a G11 and the WP-DC34 case because of snorkeling, that and wanting something to use on a daily basis when I'm not lugging the slr around. mwink.gif
