Uploading issues

I've wasted time with trying to figure out which photo files uploaded and which ones didn't and re-uploading the failed files, in several galleries, so forgive me if I don't waste more time searching for the reasons why this is happening.

I used the simple uploader to upload about 200 images in 5 different galleries. Seems about only have get loaded and I need to redo the failed files. As files upload, I get the red Errors (##) as a middle button that when I click on it, says read timed out for every file.

Using IE8 with a cable modem.

Why does this happen and how can i keep it from happening? Different uploader? Which one? Good lord this isn't rocket science.

Might want to give Nikolai's Star Explorer a shot. Free Trial.

Nik's a good guy & the program works (for Windows). Check the Star Explorer thread for more information.

Uploading can be a tricky issue if you have any type of Internet trouble.

When I get a time-out error, something disrupted your connection to SM. That can be as simple as knocking out the wire to your cable modem (been there, done that) to a local router needing a reboot, to your ISP having issues, to something on the Internet between you and SM having issues, to SM having issues. The help desk will do a good job of checking your connection, so I'd email them.

As far as uploaders, I've used every one in the book, including StarExplorer. As far as being robust, solid and available, only two are in my tool box--simple uploader and old faithful. I've uploaded over 1/2 a tb to SM and it can be a rocky process (versus a good alternative like FTP, which isn't currently available. See this thread for more information: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=114560). But once you know what can happen with uploads and how to correct it, you can get on with it.

Common problems and fixes I've found. (Caveat: these only work if you have unique filenames for each of the files uploaded to a gallery.)
    • All files don't upload - You have to check the gallery EVERY TIME you are done uploading to make sure every file got there. Even if the uploader said it was perfect. I've seen files appear or not appear in a gallery for various reasons. if it's important, check it.

To quickly re-upload the files that were missed, use simple uploader and tell it to "skip duplicates". This will only work if you haven't done any SM alterations to the originals like color adjustments, rotations, etc. Some of these functions alter the originals and they will appear like different files to the uploader. Simple uploader should find each missing file and only upload those files. And then, I'd double-check the gallery again to make sure everything made it.
    • Too many files uploaded - This problem is trickier, but can still be solved with the simple uploader in the same manner as for missing files. The difference is that instead of uploading anything, you look at each of the "view duplicate" messages beside the filename. You'll see some that say "multiple duplicates". Note the filenames. These are your duplicate uploads.

Because the "multiple duplicates" message is slightly longer than the "view duplicate" message, your eye will pick it if you just look at the length of that field. I've found it in 1000+ file uploads usually within 30 seconds by watching that field for size changes while scrolling.
    • Error message in simple uploader - I've learned that before I even waste time checking the gallery, re-fresh the link that the uploader is currently on. This link basically tells SM that you are uploading, and to which gallery. When you refresh this, the uploader will re-fresh, getting the current gallery information on duplicates. Then follow the procedure above for 'all files don't upload' and let the uploader automatically skip everything except those problem files that errored last time.
