Voluntold to shoot crew

Recently, I was volunteered to take photos for my sisters crew team (Mount St Josephs Academy).

I do have some experience shooting sports, however I envision that shooting crew will present particular difficulties, most notably the boats being far away.

My concern is finding a lens that will do the job. I shoot on a D90, so the crop sensor may help me out here, but I was wondering if I could get away with a 70-200. It may be too short and a 70-300 may work better.

Does anyone else have experience in this area and could lend some advice?

Thanks, John

If you're shooting during practice, the coach's launch is usually available and much closer. Many events have a photo/press launch to shoot from, but on larger events they tend to fill up quickly. Often it helps to have your coach or AD twist some arms to get you in.

I've shot some crew. Depends on the venue and what your shore access is if you can't get on a boat. I use two cameras, one with a 70-200/2.8 and the other with a 300/2.8. They each give you a different look. Right now from your mentioned equipment the 70-300 on a single camera may be the best way to go.

If you want shoot me a PM and I can provide a link to some galleries that might give you some ideas.

The first is shot from the top of the boathouse with a 70-200

The second is from shore with a 300 shot tight at the start.
