Nikon D200 cleaning

Hi,

I just called Nikon Canada and asked them how much it would cost to clean my D200. Their estimate was approx. $300, I was shocked as that is almost as much as the camera!

Is this the average price to clean a D200, or am I getting shafted by Nikon? Has anyone else has this experience?

Thanks!

Nikon repairs are not cheap. Why not just clean it yourself?

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Nikon is expensive. Anything they lay their hands on will be $100 minimum. The plus side is when you get it back it will look as good as new.

However, are you talking about sensor cleaning or the physical exterior?

The price sounds like a full refurb?

see if there's an authorized service center near you that might do it for less.

The problem is that there is dust either behind the viewfinder, or on the focus screen or mirror... It isn't too bad yet (about 10 or so particles of dust) but it is starting to build up, and when looking through the viewfinder, my eye occasionally gets drawn to it. I have used a rocket blower and that didn't clear it... I think it made it a tad worse to be honest...

I don't want to send it in for the dust to be removed and end up paying refurb prices. 11doh.gif

Viewfinder? Doesn't that slip right off? Mine does on D300 and D700 has a screw retainer...then you can clean/clean/clean~

It does sound like Nikon may have thought you were asking for a "CLA", "clean-lubribate-adjust".

If you want to clean the viewfinder screen yourself, and that sounds likely for the problem, the best information for removing the D200 viewfinder screen is at KatzEye:

    Thanks for the link Ziggy!

But I think I will try that after I come back from my trip... I don't want to mess it up more and have to suffer a broken camera just before I go. For now, I'll just live with it. thumb.gif
