Spyder question

I just purchased the ColorVision Spyder with Optical and am attempting to calibrate and profile my monitor. I seem to be running into some problems and was looking for some advice.
After calibrating the monitor using "Standard Calibration Mode", the result didn't seem right. So I tried doing the calibration using "Precision Calibration Mode". I set the target Luminance values as Black = .30 and White = 90.0.
However, once I start the calibration process and I am supposed to "Adjust Brightness control until the current value matches the target value", I can't come close to matching the target. With the Brightness turned all the way up, the current value = 0.04 cd/m2.
I can however reach the White Luminance target.
Does this mean my monitor is bad? Or am I doing something wrong? If this means my monitor can not reach the Black luminance value, what does that mean for the color on the screen. Will just the shadow detail be lost or will everything be off?
Thanks in advance for any help.
