unwanted emails

I'm getting unwanted emails from smugmug even though I don't have a real click-on link for my email on my home page.

The emails all say:
idea for [jimwhitaker.smugmug.com]

I don't know who they're from, but the latest says it's from
" Della Valerie [langhamfrakes3t@girlmail.ru]"

Can this be stopped?

I know absolutely nothing about coding etc., so please keep it simple!

Thanks, Jim

I don't want the cheese, I just want to get out of the trap.

Those emails aren't coming from smugmug.

You unfortunately placed your email address in clear text on your site. That means it is easily grabbed by sites trolling for email addresses in order to send spam.

I'd recommend changing to the method in the first post of the thread Stop Junkmail/Spam!!!

Thank you for responding Denise. I think you have helped me in the past (long time ago) and I appreciate it.

Unfortunately I couldn't follow those instructions if my life depended on it. So, I think I'll just remove the email address completely from my website. Slowly but surely this stuff will push me right out of having a website. What a shame.

    Thanks again for helping though.

    Let me try to help.

First, put this in the bottom javascript box. Don't change it at all; paste it in as is:
    function norobotmail(aUser, aDomain) { document.location = "mailto:" + aUser + "@" + aDomain; }
Then whereever you want your email, put this in after replacing the 'me' and the 'mydomain.com' with the pieces of your email address. This would replace putting in me@mydomain.com.
    <a href="javascript:norobotmail('me', 'mydomain.com')">Email me</a>
If that doesn't work, let me know where you are having problems.

Adding to what Denise already posted -

Your email address is out there in Spam-Land now. Your address will, more than likely, get shared and/or sold to more spammers.

You may want to get a new email address.

Sorry, I had to spend a couple days dealing with a client, but I'm back now and hope you are around. My first question is:
Is there an example of what you're trying to do for me that I could see before I try to do it? I read through that thread but couldn't find the actual final result anywhere.
    Thank you
    Jim

p.s. David - thanks for the disappointing news. I guess I really messed up.

Look at the "Contact Me" link at the bottom of Denise's website. I used that same norobotmail for a long time and never received any spam. I know use a Wufoo form for my contacts, which does not post my email address online.

The biggest spam-deterrent for me is (a) my own domain (used Godaddy) and (b) an email setup (also from Godaddy). With the email I got 2 or 3 email accounts that I can set up (name1, name2, and name3). Along with those I get 100 aliases (fakename1, fakename2,....fakename100). I can set up each fakename to point to a name. So, when I buy something online I give them a fakename; e.g., companyname @ greyleafphoto.com. That way I can track who is selling my email addresses, and if I don't want to do business with them or if I start receiving spam at companyname @ greyleafphoto.com I log into my Godaddy account and delete the alias companyname (and create another one if needed). Once I have all that setup then it is quite rare that I have to delete aliases. I have done it once in the past 3 months since most companies I buy from are pretty reputable. Only a few people know my "real" email addresses (the name1).

Okay. Thanks David for taking the time to write that. I see Denise's "Contact Me" thing. I guess these search companies can't find that line like they can find my email. Reading your second paragraph, well, I get more or less what you're talking about, but it's so distant from my ... daily life as to be unreachable. Now I know what quicksand feels like.
I'm gonna pass on all this stuff, and just leave the email off my website. I love photography, but not so much the mysterious underworld of spy vs spy that goes on with companies stealing this and selling that and getting me into trouble while I sleep.
Sincere thanks to you for trying to help me.

The norobotmail thing is easy to implement and is pretty useful. Might at least give that a chance. thumb.gif All is does is parse your actual email address into a few distinct parts which spambots are not looking for (they want the whole thing).

And sorry for the whole confusion thing, too. If someone else can explain it better than I then I welcome the opportunity to have it help you!

    Denise,

If you're still willing, I would like to take you up on your kind offer to help me put my email safely on my web page. I have just spent some time looking for the "bottom javascript box", but I can't find it anywhere. I logged in to my web page and clicked "control panel", but don't see it in there.

Tools - Control Panel - Advanced Customizer Site Wide

From there you can scroll down to find the various boxes, such as the Bottom Javascript box.

Thanks David. I found it and I put that line in there and hit update. But it didn't work. It says, There is a problem updating your settings. Please try again.

You have an extra "@" symbol in your norobotmail setting. Get rid of the one here: @nyc.rr.com

Well, however unlikely, I think it might have worked. Do you think it's safe now? Could that really be all there is?

Outstanding. I'm taking the rest of the day off to tell everyone what a great state Maryland is!

    Many thanks David!

A big thank you to Denise too. Yes indeed. I am indebted to both of you.

Maybe you're right and I should keep going. I'll go find some more trouble to get into and be back in a while with more embarassing questions.
