What does it take to be able to sell ad's on your web site?
So many hits or are we allowed to do this on smug mug?

There is no restriction against ads. If you have a power or pro account you can put ads on your site.

Be careful through - many people find ads just flat-out annoying.

As Denise said, you can put adds on your site such as Google AdSense.

But the question is: Why would you want to drive users away from your site? With an add on your site, yeah maybe you make a few bucks a month. But when people click on these adds it takes them away from your site. Not good!

Instead, consider Google Adwords. Instead of advertising other websites on your SmugMug website, Adwords lets you advertise YOUR site on other websites. Therefore driving traffic to your site. You might end up spending a few extra bucks a month, but you will be driving traffic to your site. Ultimately you will begenerating more sales with Adwords

To get on with the big ad networks, you have to have some serious traffic and content. Otherwise, Google adsense is really the only game, and it doesn't pay much. It's probably not worth detracting from your site for the pennies a day you'll get.

    ad's on site
    Sounds like well rounded advice.
There are two kinds of knowledge ---that which you already know-- and that which you know where to get.
    thanks Randall

Yep, I wish someone would have told me about this earlier as I could have positioned my site better. Things have changed in the ad space world in the last few years since blogs came about. Now, the ad network requirements for site content is much more strict, and the traffic requirements are not as high as they once were. I guess the advertisers finally realized that good conversions come from sites with good content, not just high traffic. Luckily, I always believed in that. :D
