Download the (free) Adobe DNG converter application incorporating the latest Adobe Camera Raw.

Use that to convert your NEF's to DNG and open those in CS3.

    http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/

That converter will process entire folders of files as a batch so it's all quite a bit easier than it sounds.

I skipped from PS 7.0 directly to CS4, so I don't know if CS3 included Bridge. CS4 does.

I shoot Nikon and upload in Bridge. My NEF files are automatically converted to .dng files in Bridge. There's a check box in Bridge that instructs Bridge to do that.

ACR for cs3 can open NEF's depending on which camera you have. If you let us know which camera you have one of us can look it up for you.

This is the most up to date version of ACR for cs3 I believe..

If your camera is too new to be supported by CS3 then you can use adobe's DNG converter to convert your nef's to dng's that can then be opened in Photoshop.

CS3 does not directly support RAW files from cameras that came out after CS4 appeared. As others have said, if you want to open them in CS3, you have to use Adobe's free DNG converter and convert them to DNG RAW which can then be opened in CS3. Or, just stick with CS4.

Camera Raw 4.6 supports the D40, so your D40 NEFs will work fine. But your D300s isn't supported till Camera raw 5.5..which can only be installed on CS4..these files will have to be converted to DNGs in order to get em into ACR.. DL Camera Raw 4.6 and give it a shot with the D40 thumb.gif

    wonderful.
thank you for all the information.

I will be doing some major system maintenance over the next week (yay for medical leave!), and will see if I can get my CS4 to work on Win 7 again.
