A while back (late last summer/early fall), I asked you fellow 'dgrinners, for some help on an out-take of a dog that I shot. While the help was extremely good, I felt that the end result was still a compromised one and promised a re-shoot.

If you recall, we were having difficulties in trying to 're-create' an expression with the subject; the dog, at that time, was focusing on a scampered off rabbit and with all our endeavours, we just couldn't muster him up into giving us that 'look' again. :bash

So now, Spring has sprung on the N.W. Coast and rabbits are jumping around EVERYWHERE.... We gathered up the subject, rattled some bushes, and here's what we got. Tell me what ya think.

    Thanks for the thoughts, Folks.

FWIW, the shoot was a Bit** and I knew that it would pretty much be a "now or never" opportunity - The property had 2 rabbits feeding and as we walked in, one headed off to California (*poof*), then the other ran for some thick prickle brushes and hunkered up.

The Good Pooch was a wise one and caught all the action. It was then only a matter of finding a suitable location, getting him to 'stay',,, and grab photo's! (like that's easy...). End result was that I got 7 shots of his 'gaze'. Of which 5 were of him laying down (with that same oddly crooked leg of his, as last time). Then 2 of him standing upright as the rabbit got tired of waiting us out and thought California didn't look all that bad either. mwink.gif

    Session,,, DONE!

The above take was shot #6 (whew!).

Exposure was preset before walking in (1/200th, f1.8, ISO 200)
Nikon D300 w/ the new Nifty-Fifty hanging out front (love this glass!).
SB600 set for auto fill w/ no compensation.
    Late afternoon, approx 4pm, Pacific.

Great expression. I love the ears!

Most of all, I love that you put this in the "People" forum. As if it could/should go anywhere else. wings.gif

    My dogs...
My dogs think that they are people and I like them a lot better than many people I have met.

Nice capture - I like the color version best.

What would you think about selecting the brighter area behind the head and toning down the brightness a bit? That might put more emphasis on this beautiful face.

By the way Cab.in.boston... That is one beautiful Bernese on your avatar.

At the risk of sounding like a jerk, what do these photos have to do with the people forum? headscratch.gif

I'm good with that.... But I tried and ended up leaving it where it is now (~7% burn). If I pushed it further, 'wonkiness' started to set in on the bokeh. IMO it just didn't look right. ne_nau.gif

    Thanks, Sweets.

Getting this expression repeated, was TOUGH - It literally "lit up", only for rabbits. The last time we tried, we tried birds, we tried people stomping through the brush,,,, I even tried a rabbit noise maker -NADDA. :cry

Gotta like a challenge (good grief). thumb.gif

    Good Q.

A while back (maybe a year), there was a debate that pets were an extension of 'people'. WTS, if someone thinks it should be moved and can get a moderator that agrees with their rationale, I won't be offended.

I don't know what forum it would be; it's not "wildlife" and I'm not sure if it's a "cool shot"??? The last time I shot this fella, it was posted in people, too.... Hence me tossing him back. mwink.gif

If it weren't for a 'person', it wouldn't have found it's way in front of my camera. rolleyes1.gif

Thanks. She's probably our second-most photographed subject. There must have been food involved somewhere here.

That shimmery bokeh is the tell tail of that lens. I love it. It looks painted. Check this one out with the same lens.

On another note the dog thing is a tough one. In wildlife, the shot gets no play, in other cool shots...sometimes. There is lots of great dog shots that have come across that get almost no CC all over D-grin. They just don't have a home. I think yours is like a portrait shot. Dogs are family right? Seriously though, very beautiful dog! I'd love to see more of him!

    Ya,,, Nice Pooch!

As for the lens, I don't know WHY I've never owned one before - It should be a 'staple' of every Nikon Shooter out there.

Exactly the same kind of discussion that I refered to earlier - There seems to be guite a few 'lost' dogs around here. mwink.gif

    Thanks!

As for "more"...... Of the 7 shots, 3 were in contention of being rewarded as the $$$ shot. Once all my 'magic' (PP) was done, the above turned out being the winner (colour version, btw) - And once that decision gets made, I scrap everything else.

Sorry,,, but no more photo for you! rolleyes1.gif

    Interesting factoid;

According to the Guy's in Westminster, these dogs were originally bred for hunting Bear and Wild Boar (pigs), which can both be very nasty critters. Apparently, this guy's a Champ at doing the former but the activity is now actually frowned upon in the Doggy Realm (all hunting, in general, for the breed of Boxers).

It's been a mess in the past since a long time ago, when Dgrin was still a baby, the forum (now people) had a different name and was for people, animals/pets and flowers if I remember correctly. It had at least 2 different names in the past, actually. I'm actually going through all the old threads in batches and moving them to the (now) correct forums rolleyes1.gif

At this time the people forum is definitely 'people' only, so I moved it to 'Other Cool Shots' thumb.gif

The color one for me, also thumb.gif

I like both. If I was going to put it up on my wall as art I would use the B&W. If I was using the picture to show off my really cool dog I would go for the color one.
