Question about "hits"

I recently discovered that I can open Tools>Control Panel and find out how many Views my photos have had. I can't imagine why this information would be of interest to me, but I am curious about what constitutes a "View".
Where do the Views come from? When I link to a SmugMug hosted image in a forum (ie: "Street"), do the people who open those posts count as "Views"? Or, are the Views from people who have somehow discovered that I have a SmugMug site and looked at my page?
Since I have the Shopping Cart turned off on all of my galleries, the number of Views I get is not at all important to me. However, I am curious.

Yes. It says: We also include photo views to photos you have posted externally, such as in a blog or forum.
I don't do the blog thing, but I do sometimes use the links in a newsgroup. And, of course, the dgrin forums.
