On Sunday I am going to a Penguin Plunge (People jumping into a river in the winter). I'd like to photograph the event just for fun and to practice using my camera. I've only had it a month and just realized I've never shot anything outdoors! The plungers will be jumping into the Hudson River. I'd like to capture the splashes and facial expressions. Any suggestions?

I was thinking of using my 70-210 lens. I've never been to one of these events so I don't know how close I can get. My only other option is my 50mm. I'd also love help with the settings. Automatic? Sports mode? Try manual???
