Lens advice

I need some advice. I currently have the canon 24-70 2.8 on a 5d mark 2
I sold all my pentax stuff and I just purchased a 7d for my second camera, and would like to get a great lens for it.

What I would like to do, is use the 7d for more telephoto type shots if you will. I plan on carrying both cameras, and the cropped sensor should help me with this effort.

Which lens would be recommended for picking up of the 7d, where the 70mm 5d left off?

I'm not opposed to going with sigma or tamron, I'm most interested in fast lenses.

Thanks!

What do you plan to shoot with it? "more telephoto type shots" isn't much to go on. That being said, you probably would not be disappointed in owning the 70-200 F2.8.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I'm not too excited about the size of that lens however. What I am planning on shootings is close-ups, that my 5d with the current lens I have cannot reach. I am interested in starting with the cropped sensor around 40-50mm. This would mean that I have good wide angle with the full sized sensor at 20mm, all the way up to whatever the 7d with the new lens can deliver.

Hope that makes sense. Any lenses a little smaller that might have good quality and the range I am fishing for that could be recommended?

I'm worried the 70-200, starting at the equivalent of 112mm, is leaving a gap between the 5d and the 7d. Carrying two cameras, one with this lens, may be crazy.

Looking at your posting history to see what you shoot, here's what I think. I think you should get yourself a bitchin' little prime telephoto and not worry about the gaps in your focal lengths. Something like the 135mm F2, or 200 F2.8 would give you the speed and reach you need on the 7D in a very compact form, all while delivering the very best image quality. Plus either of those lenses would be incredibly sweet on the 5DMII as well.

If you want to do "bazaar shots" (tight shots of street scenes and people, etc.) then the 70-300 DO should be nice- I have the standard, not the difractive optics type, but it has a much lighter weight and shorter build. This won't be as nice or as fast as a prime, but it's flexible and discrete.
