Virtual Tourist an excellent resource site for information about traveling anywhere in the world. Although it is not a photo specific site; you can get a lot of information regarding photography in any area in the world.
As an example, I wanted to photograph performances of Chinese Opera on my upcoming trip to China this April and I posted the question on the Beijing Forum of Virtual Tourist and found out that full performances of Chinese Opera in Beijing do not allow photography (because they sell pictures) but, that there is a tea house which allows photography of excerpts of Chinese Opera performances and also allows photography backstage.
I have also gained a lot of local information on the availability of photo equipment in Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai. Big ticket items are not bargains but, there are some good bargains in accessories such as flash triggers, etc.
Here is a reply I got:
"I discovered that the Photography Equipment City (the website in Chinese) in Wukesong intersection on the west 4th ring road of Beijing is the place to go for all my photography needs. They sell all the popular camera and lenses at almost the same price as amazon or ritz), mostly with manufacture warranty.
This is a large 2 story building and houses more than 100 photography equipment shops. The shops offer all things related to photography such as cameras, lenses, lighting, photo printing, framing, photography books, even there are a few photo schools in the building."
I would expect that Virtual Tourist forums other than those concerning China could supply the same type of information on their specific areas.
