Nice capture there.

The Sepia is OK, but I'm wondering how it would look in just B&W?

Horses looked kinda bedraggled in color due to the recent rains. The sepia seemed to fit the mood. I will throw up a BW to see how it compares.

Agreed on the colour - nice blue sky, green grass (memory colours) and the "red" horses. Great "primary" colours!

By far the Sepia version is the best, it gives the photo a certain "look at me" quality, the color version is oversaturated and the black and white looks very noisy and there is just no pop.
But the horses can be a really cool shot with a little fixing, nice job.

Did you use a polarizer when you took this shot? I get noisy skies like that at times when I use a polarizer and convert it to B&W. It has something to do with the red channel but I haven't figured out a good way to fix it. Maybe try applying a green filter in PP?

The noise comes from the red channel, if your monotones are having noisy sky, then the bias in the conversion is coming from the sky. You can make your conversions favour the other two channels more so that you have less noise in the sky, however that may reduce the drama of the sky somewhat. Before going into agressive luminosity or single channel noise reduction, try running higher color/chroma noise reduction in your raw converter or manually in Photoshop as in the link below (smoothing with a color blend or in Lab color mode to the AB channels).
