Hello I am working on perfecting my basketball pictures please let me have it. But give specifics such as iso, shutter speed, f/stop. I have tried with 2.8 lenses though the pictures are less than sharp and no flash perspective please. These were shot at iso2500, f/1.4, 1/1000th in manual mode center point of focus, noise reduction turned off in camera and noise ninja only no other processing.
Thanks for your critics.

Love the shots. What lens are you using?

Where are you standing/sitting? It appears you must be almost right underneath the basket - how do you not get wiped out??? I shoot boys HS BB and usually sit on the sidelines just oppossite the basket.

    THanks for sharing.

    Thanks Wendy,
If I told you well.... you know how that goes I'd have to ....

I am using the canon 50 1.2L usually at 1.4 at 1/1000th of a second and 2500 ISO depends on what end of the court I sit. At our gym one side is 2000 and the other is 2500. Also I change back and forth between 1.4 and 1.6 depth of field is narrow so you need to be spot on. I also shot manual and white balance, with no in camera noise reduction. I have also bumped the in camera contrast, saturation, at whatever else is on that screen. Then I usually try to shoot a little hot on the white uniforms which is always a little cold on the dark uniforms. My post processing is delete what I don't like and noise ninja the rest then load to my website for the parents and whoever else to see. Just don't have the time to mess with pictures need to stick to my day job for income. I usually get about 200 that are okay to me and 40 that are great in my eyes.

I either sit right to the side of the basket or directly behind the basket up against the painted area about 3' off the court. The hard part is that much past the free throw line the shots aren't to good to me, just a little soft.

We should start a thread that is what works for you indoor sports without flash getting the most out of your camera.
So I gave away all my secrets.
Only ben run over once and that was a playoff game with tv cameras and other shooters all around the poor kid had no place to go and he was a monster at 6-7 about 300lbs maybe more we called him the giant, our boys looked like kids next to him. He looked like he was in his mid to late 20's.
    Hope that helps.

There is another guy on this site that is using a 300m 2.8 on the base line. I havent had the guts to try that one yet though his pictures are amazing. They are pretty much head arms basket and ball. We are in playoffs boys my daughter is done after the first playoff so I can't try the 300 on that game and a little edgy on doing it at a playoff. And then I just haven't been able to get what I like with a 2.8 lens. Maybe just need to do a better job in post processing or camera setup. I really don't get why, I shot football which is in the dark and use the 300 2.8 at 6400 iso and the pictures are great or as great as I can get them yet 6400 in the gym not so great. I was shooting an event the other day where the gal was using a 7d and shooting at f/4 the pictures I saw of hers were incredible also though you can only see small ones on her site.

Thanks for sharing all your dirty little secrets. ;-)

All of the courts I've been shooting from have only a narrow walking space between the end of the BB court and the wall. With three feet you've got a little more room to work with than what I do.

In our home gym we have a stage at one end, and I've seen our newspaper photographer shoot from there and he's always standing up. I prefer to sit and use my knee to rest my lens on. It's a little darker at that end which is another reason I don't shoot from there.

Thanks for giving the details. It's always interesting to hear how others are shooting BB games indoors w/o a flash.

Last game of the season before playoffs is tonight. I'm ready to go back out there and get some good ones! :ivar

I always sit on the floor with my legs crossed and sometimes I am sitting inches off the baseline just depends on the gym. Some gyms are so small with a long lens I would be over the baseline, lately pretty much stick to the 50. I have a Sigma 50 1.4 also but then I seem to color correct, it is crazy...need to sell that one.
Good luck with the playoffs share some pics.
