Cokin Filter

Hi,

I am considering switching my filter system to Cokin for more flexibility and easier handling. I have a Nikon D300 with 24-70/2,8 70-200/2,8 and a Tokina 12-24/4,0. Does anybody has some experience with this configuration in combination with the Cokin P system? If I understand the system correctly, the use of the lens hoods in no longer possible. Am I right and are there any issues with this?

Thanks,
Andreas

With the exception of a ND or polarizer every filter is available in PS. Why would you handicap your lenses by not being able to use the hoods?

the graduated ND filters are the only thing I've found them to be handy for, over a thread on filter. I've not tried a polar cokin filter...that would be frustrating. especially when I've used a thread on CP and the cokin adapter with a Grad ND filter together.

that and not all of us process in PS and filters provide a fun way to work with the front end of the whole process.

Cokin works fine with your lens hood, but let me clarify:

If you use the filter holder, it likely won't fit on your lens hood, as it will be too narrow and there is no way to connect it I suspect. However, that being said, I RARELY use the filter holder. I primarily use ND and Grad filters from Cokin, and find it much more convenient, especially with the Grad, to simply hold the filter by hand in front of the lens. For the ND, this is simple, for the Grad, you have to hold it steady, but it does not effect outcome of long exposures (seconds).

In this case, then sure, it works find with your lens hoods, no problem.

As long as you don't want any sharp filters and you never shoot scenes with a greater dynamic range than your sensor and there are no issues with far blue (through ultra-violet) or red (through infra-red).

The Cokin system includes both 'modular hood' and 'modular bellows':

I have the Cokin P system, use ND, Grad ND, Circ Polarizer(Glass) and their 6 star filters. 77mm 72mm 62mm 50mm adapter rings
ND works well on this system, one thing about Cokin ND Grad ND plastic filters they can scratch but there are plenty of glass filters out there that can fit the holder. I shoot D300 17-55mm f2.8 you can get some vignetting wide open 17mm 77mm goes away 18-19.
The holder you can have CP and 2 other filters. You can multiply you grad ND if you need to reallt stop down on bright days to get good water flow shots
I have tried handholding filters it does not work for me, not steady enough.
I have had screw on grad ND but they do not give the versatility that you get with the Cokin

This shot was done with the Grad ND reversed with the hard edge right along the horizon with the fade going to the top

I use a Cokin type system, and swear by it. I won't use screw on except for my polarizers and 10-stop ND.

That being said, I don't use Cokin Brand due to color cast issues that they won't admit to. I use Hi Techs with Cokin rings and holders.
