Camera info a bit off

I notice in the Camera Info section of an image that smugmug tries to guess at the focal length in terms of 35mm film. For example, at mercphoto.smugmug.com, under the 3rd featured gallery (SKUSA My Pics), first image, get camera info. The focal length was 255mm and smugmug's guess was 271mm. I'm not sure how smugmug guesses the focal length in 35mm equivalency. However, on Canon Digital Rebel (300D) and 10D the factor is 1.6X. Anyway this can be changed? How is that cacluated?
