In Memory of Bill

I gave him a name, Bill. I remember visiting that nest for the first time and I took over 150 shots of him on the perch. He gave me the first mating show. He gave me this awesome shot (below). He was the first eagle I ever photographed. His nest was on the SR70, right behind the Church in Bradenton, Florida.

It was a sad that for me when I heard that he was electrocuted this past Saturday while he standing on the usual electric pole. Now, the female is by herself, taking care of the two eaglets. I have been stopping by the nest these two days, just to check her out, making sure she is ok. Yesterday, she flew on top of the electric pole, and called for Bill, and it was louder than usual. That moment sadden me even more. Not only she has to raise the chicks by herself, she has to deal with the Church crowd, who have been fighting to try to get rid of the nest so they could expand the church. Luckily, there are laws that protect this from happening.

For those members that have been to this nest, I just wanted to inform you guys about this sad news.

It is bitter sweet as I just found out that the best shot he gave me was the winner in a competition.

    Gorgeous capture Troy. clap.gifclap.gifclap.gif

Large numbers of birds are electrocuted yearly. Down here the power company has taken to building nesting platforms on power poles for them.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Horrible sad story! I feel for you. I've been watching the same returning pair of mating bald eagles for the past 4 years. Last year they had 3 eaglets, 2 made it out of the nest. The good news is the numbers keep going up and up. I remember when it was very rare to see and eagle, now thankfully its very common!

I have been hearing eaglets dying down here in FL. The nest that I go often lost both. And another nest just lost the only one. Sad.
    Hope these two will survive.
