Istanbul!!
Hi everyone!! Here are some of my Istanbul shots. Probably not too wise to post now after Jacobov's great post, but all C&C are always welcome!
In its long history, Istanbul has served as the capital city of the Roman Empire (330–395), the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire (395–1204 and 1261–1453), the Latin Empire (1204–1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453–1922). The city was chosen as joint European Capital of Culture for 2010. It extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) sides of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world that is situated on two continents.
Blue Mosque in the early morning blue sky.
More Blue Mosque shots. Really like the sunset shots by Jacobov, but cannot find a similar angle...
Inside the Blue Mosque. The high ceiling is lined with the 20,000 blue tiles that give the mosque its popular name. Fine examples of 16th-century Iznik design, the oldest tiles feature flowers, trees and abstract patterns.
Hagia Sophia, once a church, converted into a mosque. Real Interesting to see images of Jesus and Mary in a mosque!
View from Galata Tower in the day.
Topkapi palace, the official and primary residence in the city of the Ottoman Sultans for 400 years. Many priceless relics and gifts from countries around the world housed in the museum. Was stopped from taking pictures in some parts of the palace though.
Basilica Cistern, the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that lie beneath Istanbul. It was built during the reign of Justinian I (527-565) to supply water to the palaces in the vicinity.
Cheers!
