Before I mess with my CNAMES

I'd just like to verify that I can set up my smugmug domain to point to a subdomain instead of the full domain...

Ive read all the articles and all the instructions.
My webhost is dreamhost and theres even a special dreamhost wiki.
Are there any tips tricks etc. You guys can give me?
I have no idea what a CNAME is and im pretty sure im going to mess this up...
