Non-Flash Video Thumbnail

I had assumed that the "Get a Link", "Blog" option for video would embed an image with the ">" (play) icon on top of it, just as they are displayed in galleries. (see attached)

Given the issues with Flash, I would prefer to provide a simple image that INDICATES that it is a video, that when clicked on, would load the actual video stream. This is a file that can be played on both desktops and most modern mobile devices.

Unfortunately, it appears that the "Blog" option is just a thumbnail with an href to the video. For the "average user" they would have no idea that this is a video without being told "This is a video, click on it to watch it" because the "play" icon (that usually communicates this) is not present.

Is there a trick that I can use to overlay the play "watermark" (for lack of a better term) on the image so that it is obvious that it is a video? SmugMug is doing this in our galleries... Even if it takes a little work, I would like to add this to my site.

Thanks!
Eric

    Hi Eric,

Sorry that you haven't received a reply yet. The next time, I recommend posting a link to the video in question and also to your blog post so that people could actually take a look at what you're referring to. Reading the text alone, it wasn't really clear to me right away what you wanted.

If you want a video embed on your blog, you have to copy the 'video embed' code from the share > get a link tool. Paste that code into your blog.

The 'blogs' link is mainly meant for photos giving you an embedded photo and a link to the gallery. Due to the nature of this photo embed, it doesn't include any play buttons as these are not part of the thumbnail. Just use the video embed.

You may add a suggestion to our uservoice pages.

    I hope this helps,
    Sebastian

    Sebastian,

I do not want to use Flash because a lot of the visitors to my site are using iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches. So the "video embed" isn't an option because it doesn't have a graceful fallback to a non-flash version.

I would like to get some js or css that would allow me to either have the flash version there as primary and a fallback to a direct load of the video (when clicked) if flash isn't present... but I want the same "play" overlay that SmugMug uses in every SM gallery to indicate a video.
