Is there a way to make the Canon 580ex fire without taking a picture?

I now have a flash meter and can't seem to find away to fire the flash to get a reading without just taking a picture.

TIA

There should be a Test Fire button on the back of the flash. On my 420EX the Test Fire button is the same as the light that illuminates to indicate the flash is charged and ready to fire.

There is a button on the back. The flash is in my car or I'd tell you exactly what it is.

... and the pilot lite on the ST-E2 is a button too, that fires the flashes.
