There is a somewhat related occurrence happening the Street forum now where an individual has decided to maintain a single thread for all their images. There's the one aspect of etiquette to other forum members and then there's the intent of the poster as to what they want from DGrin. I guess it could be somewhat similar to the long-running "Square Portraits" thread in People, but the poster doesn't seem to want to interact with others outside of his one thread.
Is it possible to disable images from a single individual or a specific thread without changing overall forum defaults? I'd like to at least be able to check comments without having to scroll through 50-60+ images each time. I could imagine the same thing might be useful in the Journeys forum as it probably wouldn't be necessary to see older images each time as the newer ones are added.
Alternatively, at what point does it make sense to close a thread and start a new one when many, many images are there?
Posting Too Many Photos!!!!
Michswiss, this should only be a problem if you are viewing by RSS. Online the forum will take you to the last viewed post. Even Tapatalk can be set to take you to the last post of a thread.
You must not even look at the Photo association (the Dgrin game) thread that has 12,688 posts on 635 pages, every post an image!!
Not much to be done about it......

Here is a little known feature that takes you directly to the last post in a thread. On the forum listing, click on the tiny arrow in the Last Post column:
That doesn't solve the problem of having too many pics in a single post, of course, but it can be helpful when a thread spans many pages and you are only interested in the latest post.
Hi Don. The behaviour about going to the last post has some weaknesses too, in particular about how the post your looking at is constantly scrolling away as subsequent images are loaded on the current page. Pretty frustrating in its own right. I also used to post in the Association thread when I first joined DGrin but gave up on it when I wasn't getting back to Australia that often anymore.
I still think there should be some guidelines such as dropping a PM to the Mod in advance when a thread might become excessively image-laden over time? The current case in Street is more of a "Gallery" thread for an individual than sharing or looking for feedback. Maybe some leeway for moderators to set individual forum guidelines?
Don't read the thread or jump to the last post in a thread--you can do that by looking in the "last post" column and clicking on the small blue arrow. Alternatively, if you don't want to see a particular user's posts, you could put them on your "ignore" list. You'll find that in the "You!"->Edit Options menu.
No offense but I think it's a little unfair to ask that a user be censored or a thread closed to accommodate your viewing desires.

I do try to use the "last post" option but it still loads the full thread and will continue to kick the post I'm viewing off screen as each of the images above are loaded. I also know I can simply ignore the specific case. But I still think there is an etiquette and community aspect to consider. It would be cool if some of the additional features discussed in this thread were under consideration. I think it would improve the usability of the overall site.

Earlier, you said dgrin was about the images. But you don't want to see them. I don't get it. As far as community aspect, there are 11 or 12 posters in this thread--not counting moderators. There are 50,000+ registered users. From a community perspective, do you honestly think that we should limit the number of images per thread to accommodate a very small number of people?
We have and continue to consider the suggestions presented in this and other threads and in this particular case, have decided not to make changes. That doesn't mean we don't want to help you solve your particular issue. In fact, there are several suggestions that have been made that would mitigate this for you. I'm sorry that they're not the solutions you want (which would be to limit the number of images in a post/thread) but they will work for you.

I think I'm amongst the fifty thousand plus as well
My original motivation to comment around the handling of large numbers of images in a single thread was and remains one of etiquette and community. Not that it should be disallowed. I also think it would be good if there were an option to selectively choose whether to load images in a specific thread instead of changing the behaviour of the whole site. I think it would add to the overall usability of the site.
That said, the site IS about the images. To share and discuss them. Whether I like an image or style or not has nothing to do with the OP of the image. It can just be frustrating to deal with so many images in a single thread from a single person, loaded each time when it would be just as easy to have separate threads. My personal view is that it would benefit everyone. But hey, it's not the end of the world.
I do try to study every image posted into the Street forum. So much to learn.
I would go with multiple photos in one thread, over multiple threads by one user anytime. That way we see a larger variety of photographers work on the front page.

Didn't see that this option was mentioned before - if so, sorry for the duplication.
If you want the page to load without taking the time for all the photos to download, for Internet Explorer, you can go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, & uncheck the "show pictures" option (for Firefox, it's Tools, Options, Content). I believe that will help the page load faster & you should still be able to see the photos if you click on them (or maybe right click & show photo). Maybe using that option will help those with dial-up.
I used to have dial up & appreciate the frustration, but hey, it's a photo site - what would you expect? It would be quite disappointing if there weren't lots of photos. You could always use the time waiting on pages to load for experimenting with your camera or photo processing software.

A photograph is an artistic expression of life, captured one moment at a time . . .
