I speak to a LOT of photographers who use SmugMug, and consistently, the one issue that everyone has trouble understanding is how SmugMug organizes galleries.

I've gotten pretty good at describing the relationship between Categories, Sub-Categories and Galleries, and thought that I could help others learn. So, I created a video that you can watch that does a very good job with explaining the topic.

This video was created by myself with the help of my lovely wife (and Instructional Designer) Tasha. We have plans to release a LOT more videos covering many SmugMug topics. Our next few videos will detail how to use the pricing tool, coupons, packages and event marketing. Eventually, we'll have an entire training library for SmugMug.

The videos I'll be posting here are COMPLETELY FREE to watch and share; but, please, don't claim that they're yours :)

    Just a quick note.. If you've watched the video, and have any feedback, please let me know. My hope is that I cover the topic thoroughly without being too technical and/or boring. Am I meeting my goal? :)

    Dr. David:

    Bravo!...this will be a godsend to new SmugMug account holders, for sure. I think the "active" tutorial style (sliding screens, arrows pointing to the critical info, "live" human voice explaining things as the tutorial progesses) is much more helpful than static screenshots with tons of text written in "serious geek-speak" OR in "hip-hop Smug-speak" (either of which needs an interpreter for some segment of the population).

    Great first effort!

    I plan to cover coupons, packages and event marketing in short order. I'll actually be trying to create a full SmugMug 'course' that takes you from sign up, to advanced SM in the space of a few hours. That's a more ambitious project, but, we're starting to get the course outline flushed out; so, hopefully I'll work the kinks out in these stand-alone videos before I make a big mess of a larger course video lol3.gif

    Anyways, I'm glad you're liking them. More ARE on the way.

    David,

    I loved your first tutorial! I wish I had seen it before I tortured myself trying to set things up in the beginning. It's too bad that the site "help" pages aren't more clear in how to do things so that you didn't have to create tutorials. Great job, and I look forward to the next tutorials!

    You have my vote. I understood both of the videos and if I can understand them you've done more than should be expected.

    Very well done.

    Very helpful tutorial. However there is a little too much zooming and panning in the Smart Gallery for me, it was a little disconcerting. I know how tough these can be to create as I do them at my work as well. The Smart Collection one did help me out quite a bit while trying to do some stuff on my site.

    Thanks for the feedback :) I'm still figuring out the right mix of pan/zoom vs. no pan/zoom, so, always appreciate the feedback!

    Upcoming vids:

    * Event Marketing
    * Coupons
    * Packages
    * More pricing techniques
    * Pro Branding
    * New features (as they become available)

    The plan is to create the videos in anticipation of any new features, and have them released at the same time as the feature. But, they all take time to make, so, I apologize in advance if the release cycle seems slower than people would like.

    Funny thing about video.. For a 5 minute video, I can easily spend 5hours creating it. It's a really crazy relationship between run-time and production time. Luckily, with the new Premier Pro CS5, it can use my video card to speed up the rendering of the final product, but that saves only the time at the end--not the editing, pan/zoom, callouts, etc..

    Also, if anyone else has a topic they'd love to see covered, please let me know, and I'll try to include it in my project list.

    Of course, I do offer private and group instruction too; so, feel free to contact me privately if you're interested.
