I see the similarities, but #1 does it for me. The lanterns just really stand out against the sky.

i had to replace the sky, because at the time, it was really ugly and overcast...i was only able to find one sky photo big enough to fit both photos...so i used it for both photos.

A "knock-out" is when you use some technique to remove part of the image in order to replace it with something else. In this case, you've knocked-out the original sky and replaced it.
