HDR Portrait

A local metal band wanted me to do some shots for them and they like the gritty look of some of my HDR shots. I wouldn't normally turn to HDR for shooting people, but for these guys, I think it worked out...

I agree that it fits the subject very well!
Street & Portrait because of the people. Landscape because it's pretty.
Disappointed with AF of Tamron 28-75 2.8, me less happy.

Looks like they were about to kick your a$$. I like it! The cloudy sky adds to the effect.

Very cool and great effect. Minor nit: it seems the image is slightly rotated clockwise. The bridge support and the horizon feel a little angled. The relative heights of the people seems to exacerbate that feeling. Still, very, very cool!

Looks great! It really fits the subject, and I find that is often the hardest thing to get right! Nice work.

    I love this. iloveyou.gif

Was this a multiple exposure true HDR, or a single exposure pseudo HDR?

    Thanks,

@Jwar: Funny, these are 5 of the nicest guys I've ever met... rolleyes1.gif

@adbsgicom: I agree that it could look rotated when looking at certain perspectives. Billy, on the far right, really is that short. I should have put him on the uphill side (left). Todd (sunglasses, back right) is pretty tall and I put him downhill a little to try to even things out. Rich (drummer, left) sits in a cave of a drumset away from the world during their gigs and felt a little attention starved, thus he tried to get as close to the camera as he could all the time and he was actually on the uphill side. He's not as tall as he seems.

In retrospect, I probably would have arranged them differently. When I originally cropped and straightened, I put a grid on the cables and the ones straight ahead are all vertical. But perspective/barrel distortion may be causing the north tower to look a little curved.

Minor nits are appreciated, attention to detail will only lead to improvement!

@Kdog: This was a 3 shot bracket at 0,+2,-2 shot handheld with my 5D mkii through a 16-35 @ 26mm. Base exposure was 1/400 @ f8 w/ISO400. The captures were combined and tonemapped in Photomatix, processed in PS and fine tuned in LR.

Thanks for all of your comments!

It's a very nice effect, works well for them.

And I was there where you took that photo like a month ago, told my friend I'd never seen the Golden Gate Bridge in person, and he took me over there to see it / get a pic.

Reminds me of some band shots by Joey Lawrence... not the 80s/90s singer, the 20-something photo superstar...

    Great job!

Especially for a portrait. I haven't done very many "people" HDR shots. I really like the processing!

I'm going to guess "pseudo" because it would be hard to get people to not move at all, plus the shot with the traffic over the bridge.

No, he said multiple exposure, hand held. Pretty impressive, especially since the 5DMII doesn't have a very fast frame rate. He must have steady hand. Photomatix alignment features work pretty well too with the correct settings.

It is indeed a handheld, multiple exposure image... Kdog is right about the settings in Photomatix. There are a couple and if you don't get the right result, try the other one. I also do quite a bit of cleanup in PS with layered exposure blending, too...
