The canon 17-40 is by far the superior lens and has great resale value. Image quality to me is superb.
the image below was shot @ F4, 36mm, ISO 100. I have never had a problem with any of the images shot with this lens. I did buy a sigma for my son because I didn't want to fork out the same amount of money, but it is not in the same class. The only thing extra I could ask for would be a 2.0 but I probably would never use it so why ask.

I had a hard time deciding between the S and C 24-70 but a used C won out. Not saying its better....
I wanted a fixed ap, and the faster speed enables less flash use, which suits my style.
I have also owned a 17-40L, very nice lens indeed! I rearranged my bag and sold the lens, but it was also a hard decision.... (seems to be a pattern...) It will be replaced with a WA soon.

Had a bad experience with a Sigma 120-400 and will not touch a Sigma now.
I have the Canon 24-70 which is a great lens with great colors and very sharp. There is something special about this lens and is my favourite walk around lens on my 7D. You get what you pay for:D
Regards.
But, like Ziggy alluded to - it all depends on the uses to which you will put your lens.
