Today Kirby turns 14 years old, and he was expected to die in January two years ago. In January of 2008 he had about 4 pounds of bloody liquid and a fist sized mass removed which was a grade 2 Hemangiopericytoma. They did not know if he would make it, but he recovered quite well. This is a non-malignant, but very aggressive cancer that grows back. He has since had three more surgeries to remove it when it grows back. Last week they were ready to put him to sleep as he had an open wound about 6" in diameter that looked like hamburger meat. I told the vet that except for the cancer he is a healthy and happy dog in no pain and that we should try to save him. I explained I would rather he die on the table trying to save him than to just give up. The vet knows that his blood work looks like that of a three year old. He had the wound fixed and two lumps the size of a softball removed. He is recovering nicely and probably has another 8 to 9 months now.
