i just love this shot, it's dawn on the hudson river, at peekskill, ny. about 40 miles north of nyc.

3696331-L.jpg

well, the land trust alliance liked it too, and so they'll be using it on their website and for promotional purposes.

of course, they wanted it for free ("we're a non-profit, we don't have budget, blah blah blah....") to which i say "sorry! there must be something you can pay... and so we worked out a deal where they still wrote me a check but i was able to cut them a deal as well - i happen to favor the organization.

my message? never give it away for free :deal

    Lovely shot Andy.thumb.gifthumb

May I ask how they found your photo? I'm just starting into the self promotion game. The dampness behind my ears gives it away.:D

Sorry, just my humor here, but the challenge this time is "dry", maybe you could get rid of that damp ear business for the "dry" challenge.

ginger (tis and always has been a lovely shot. But dawn? I should get back to it.)
After all is said and done, it is the sweet tea.

Yes, I too have trouble with "charging" at times. My weakness is the young model or company just starting out. "I NEED photos, but I don't have much of a budget!" I have to remind myself that I'm a young business too, and I deserve to get paid just like anyone else! Why is what I do less valuable than what anyone else does? Why is it that art should be free? Why isn't MY time worth anything? Do they work for free?...
    :soapbox

Then I get myself all worked up so I can give a reasonable quote instead of the cheap one. It's still hard though... umph.gif

Lynn I have the same problem ..I do get payed but not too often.
I am doing a job right now for free that I would have charged for but could not...it's a long story see here
Have to get it done by Sept. hope to post the results.

Most of the time it's for a friend or family so hard to charge.
It's hard to know just what to charge still haven't picked the book "Pricing Photography" yet so that might help.
I think I just need to have more confidence in what I do.
And the rest will follow (I hope):D

I think this is the hardest thing: believing so much in yourself to actually charge... Our photography is only worth so much in reality as people WANT to pay what we ask... I was talking to a gal last week on a fair, her stuff was really lovely, her asking prices were very democratic, yet she did not sell.
It seems that people find it hard to pay for photographs.
I followed a class with Annabel Williams, and the first thing she said was charge and charge good.
I think if you start charging, that your photographs must be worth it. I have days that I feel I am not up to charging, my pics are not good enough.
(I also give out freebies, because I just love photography and love the looks on people's faces when they see what you did).
Interesting thread... it should be on its own...
