Question about photo links for blogs

Hello-
Please forgive me if this is a really stupid question. I have a blog in which I post lots of pictures and although I have had a smugmug account for a long time I had been using photobucket for the blog pictures (not sure why). Well, I accidentally deleted a lot of photobucket pictures and then they were gone from the blog too! This was probably very stupid but I just wasn't thinking. The reason this is such a big deal is because i was planning to do a blog book or something to give my kids someday. So, now I am using the blog links on Smugmug and my question is...if I delete a photo from Smugmug will it also disappear from my blog?

Thank you for any help!

Pamela

It depends upon how you put it in your blog. If you link to the image in your blog on Smugmug, then the image only exists one place (on Smugmug) and the browser reading the blog page loads the image from Smugmug. If that's the case, when you delete the image from Smugmug, it's gone from the blog page too.

On the other hand, if the blog provides image hosting for blog images, then the images could be hosted on the blog site and then they would have no connection to Smugmug after they were put in the blog. So, it depends entirely upon how they are put in the blog page and where the references in the blog page are located.

If I use the "share" and then "embeddable link" and then "blog" feature on Smugmug would that mean I should not delete the Smugmug photos? Sorry- I am so clueless with this stuff.

If you use share on smug to get the URL for your photo then use that URL in your blog you are telling the blog to retrieve the photo from your smugmug site whenever it needs to display the photo.

If you delete the photo from your smugmug site then it will be gone from your blog as well.

Thank you both! So it sounds like the only way to avoid this is to use the blog site photo uploader which I don't do because I like larger sizes. Oh well.

    Thanks again!

One thing I do that you might consider is that I never link an image in a forum or blog to one of my public galleries. I want the freedom to reorganize my public galleries at any time without affecting all the images I've linked all over the web.

So ... to accomplish that, I have a couple unlisted galleries (not shown to the public) that I put ALL my externally linked images into. I NEVER delete an image from those galleries and I never have to worry about those galleries being reorganized because they aren't public so nobody sees them but me. Since Smugmug has unlimited storage, there is never a reason for me to be tempted to "clean them up" and delete anything. After one gallery grows to several hundred images, I sometimes start a new one just to keep the gallery from getting unwieldy if I have to do some management tasks on it (which I generally don't).

That is a great idea and I will start doing that! Thank you so much for making sense of this!
