How to make a transparent watermark?

I'm trying to make a transparent watermwark for my Smugmug site. I create it using a GIF, transparent background, but when I upload it it become white background. I would like to use this so I can place a small watermark name on my photos. So far my solution is to make a watermark that is the entire length of the photo but it covers up too much of the photo.

Maybe I'm lost on the steps to make the watermark correctly?
