Problem with "collected" photos and google maps

I've recently started experimenting with the idea of posting all my photos in unlisted galleries organised by the shoot date and then "collecting" the best photos to show in the public galleries organised by category. This means all my photos are accessible if I want to show them to friends and family but only the best photos are shared publicly. An additional benefit is that I can "collect" individual photos into multiple virtual galleries if they fit multiple categories.
It seemed to be working well but I noticed on the public gallery there is a "Map This" link (my photos are geotagged) so I clicked on it and google maps opened up somewhere in the middle of California (photos are in UK) showing 0 photos. Is this because the real copies of the photos are in an unlisted gallery? If so, is there any way I can achieve what I'm trying to do?
