A Rare Look Inside a 3 Million Dollar Birdcage

This is a magnificent 1960 Maserati Tipo 61. It is one of the most rare and most desirable race cars ever built. Pay particular attention to the proliferation of small-diameter tubing that runs all over the place and that formed the basis of the chassis construction. This maze of tubing was the reason this car was dubbed the " Birdcage ". Because of this unique construction feature, this car was exceptionally light weight and extremely rigid....prime attributes in a race car.
To see " inside " a Birdcage is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The scribbling on the trunk is where Carroll Shelby signed his name. I don't know if he raced this car but I do know that Stirling Moss raced this very car to victory on occasion.

I always wanted to lie naked on a bearskin rug in front of a fireplace. Cracker Barrel didn't take kindly to it.

maybe half, if not more, the parts to put together an auto something like that.
Could use these very photos like x-rays as I move across the project.
Grab some folks and see what happens. Have to dig up some time for
that of course. Not my usual gig. But I can weld. Run to the store. Things
like that.

artwork with cars. Impressive stuff. Work into the nights kinda deal.
I do this and that scratching for things for a line on the side. Getting
me thinking what I could do. Like I need another egg on my table.
Could go say hello and go from there.
Count me in Michael.......When this is ready to race where are we going to find a Sterling Moss to race it.....???????
the buzz. For me its old talk at the breakfast inn as i don't go to the track.
But I know some folks that do. Mech guys long here in town that know the
score plus or minus. What are you up for and so forth?
Sir Stirling Moss is still around (81 this September); a true gentleman in every sense of the word, and one of the few greats to survive into advanced years (smart chap!).
I think my favourite driver of all time has to be Jim Clark…
Thanks for sharing the great pics!

If I thought either one of you guys was serious, I'd already have my bag packed and be on the run....that is if I could make it that far before Darlene and her machete got hold of me. Sad to say, my car building days are long gone. Darn shame.

Sir Stirling Moss was supposed to be a guest at this show but he suffered a fall just before coming and had to remain in England. I hope he is doing well. He was here several years ago and I had him sign a book for me.
I'm with you about Jim Clark...just a terrific driver.
Thanks for your very kind remarks.
Tom
